International Day of Sign Languages

International Day of Sign Languages

International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL) is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September every year along with International Week of the Deaf.

The objective of the day is to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf.

The choice of 23 September is the same date that the World Federation of the Deaf was established in 1951.

The theme of this day for 2019 is “Sign Language Rights for All”.

Sign languages are fully-fledged natural languages, structurally distinct from the spoken languages.
