UN appoints Henrietta Fore as UNICEF head


UN chief Antonio Guterres has appointed former senior US government official Henrietta H Fore as the new executive director of UNICEF,

Fore has worked on economic development, education and health, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief for the most vulnerable in the international and developing world.

She was the first woman to be appointed Administrator of the US Agency for International Development and Director of US Foreign Assistance in the Department of State, she held these positions between 2006 and 2009.


From 1989 to 1993, she was working as the USAID Assistant Administrator for Asia and for Private Enterprise.

Currently CEO of Holsman International, a manufacturing and investment company, Fore also served as Undersecretary of State for Management, the Chief Operating Officer for the United States Department of State.

The United Nations Childrens' Fund (UNICEF )  is a United Nations (UN) program headquartered in New York City that provides humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group.

Sri Lanka has become the 163rd nation to accede to the anti-personnel mine ban convention

The Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction, commonly referred to as the Mine Ban Treaty or Ottawa Treaty, was adopted on September 18, 1997 at the Diplomatic Conference on an International Total Ban on Anti-Personnel Land Mines at Oslo, Norway.

The treaty, which came into force on March 1, 1999, prohibits the use, stockpiling, production and transfer of antipersonnel mines.

The French Parliament   passed a law banning the production of all oil and gas by 2040.

France will not grant any new permits or renew existing ones that allow fracking or the extraction of fossil fuels in the country and its overseas territories.

France has also committed to ending the sale of gasoline and diesel vehicles by 2040.

French government claims the ban is a world first.

World Health Organization has declared Gabon a "polio-free country",

there was a  lack of new reported or suspected cases in the central African country.

Polio is a highly-infectious viral disease which mainly affects young children and can result in permanent paralysis. There is no cure and it can only be prevented through immunisation.

Cases of polio have decreased by 99 percent since 1988, when polio was endemic in 125 countries and 350,000 cases were recorded worldwide.

Gabon, a country along the Atlantic coast of Central Africa, has significant areas of protected parkland.

The first polio vaccine was the inactivated polio vaccine.

 It was developed by Jonas Salk and came into use in 1955.


Polio vaccines are vaccines used to prevent poliomyelitis (polio).

There are two types: one that uses inactivated poliovirus and is given by injection (IPV), and one that uses weakened poliovirus and is given by mouth (OPV)



 The oral polio vaccine was developed by Albert Sabin and came into commercial use in 1961

Singapore's first electric car-sharing service was officially launched with 80 cars and 32 charging stations

BlueSG, a subsidiary of France's Bollore Group, started the service

BlueSG plans to increase the number of its cars to 100 by the end of the year, and is targeting 1,000 cars and 2,000 charging points by 2020

Bollore operates similar electric vehicle sharing plans in other cities, including Paris, Bordeaux and Lyon in France, Indianapolis and Los Angeles in the United States and Torino in Italy.

Bolloré is a French transportation company headquartered in Puteaux, on the western outskirts of Paris, France. The company, a paper–energy–plantations–logistics conglomerate, employs 28,000 people around the world.

Australia defeated Rio Olympics champions Argentina 2-1 in the final of the Hockey World League Final to win gold at Bhubaneswar

goals from Blake Govers and Jeremy Hayward helped the defending champions beat Argentina at Kalinga Stadium.

India reclaimed the bronze medal in the tournament. In the third-fourth place classification match, they defeated Germany 2-1. Indian took the lead in the 21st minute through SV Sunil. Germany equalised through its reserve custodian Mark Appel in the 36th minute.

A penalty corner conversion by Harmanpreet Singh in the 54th minute sealed the win and the third place for the Indians.

 India had also won the bronze in the last edition of the tournament in Raipur in 2015

A teenage Syrian refugee won a prestigious international prize   for building a school and providing an education to hundreds of children who fled to Lebanon to escape the conflict.

    Al Jounde, a refugee of the Syrian civil war, set up a school together with his family in a Lebanese refugee camp that currently provides 200 children with eduction.

The International Children’s Peace Prize is awarded annually to a child who has made a significant contribution to advocating children's rights and improving the situation of vulnerable children

The first Children's Peace Prize was launched in November 2005 during the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Rome, an annual meeting of Nobel Peace Prize winners and international organisations such as UNICEF and Amnesty International.
