World's first 4D printing for ceramics developed

World's first 4D printing for ceramics developed

Scientists have successfully developed the world's first 4D printing for ceramics, that can be used to create complex, shape-changing objects.

4D printing is conventional 3D printing combined with the additional element of time as the fourth dimension, where the printed objects can re-shape or self-assemble themselves over time with external stimuli, such as mechanical force, temperature, or a magnetic field.

Researchers from the City University of Hong Kong made use of the elastic energy stored in the stretched precursors for shape morphing.

When the stretched ceramic precursors are released, they undergo self-reshaping. After heat treatment, the precursors turn into ceramics.

Ceramic has a high melting point, so it is difficult to use conventional laser printing to make ceramics.

The existing 3D-printed ceramic precursors, which are usually difficult to deform, also hinder the production of ceramics with complex shapes.

To overcome these challenges, researchers developed a novel ceramic ink, which is a mixture of polymers and ceramic nanoparticles.

The resultant elastomer-derived ceramics are mechanically robust.

They can have a high compressive strength-to-density ratio, and they can come in large sizes with high strength compared to other printed ceramics.

With the arrival of 5G networks, ceramic products will play a more important role in the manufacture of electronic products.

The artistic nature of ceramics and their capability to form complex shapes also provide the potential for consumers to create custom ceramic mobile phone backplates.

Tokyo 2020 to deploy facial recognition

Tokyo 2020 to deploy facial recognition

Hundreds of thousands of Tokyo 2020 athletes, staff and reporters will be scanned by cutting-edge facial recognition technologyfor the first time in  f Olympic Games

About 3,00,000 athletes, staff members, volunteers and reporters will be required to use their ID card and be verified with the facial recognition system to access venues.

The security overhaul will prevent fraudulent entry by people borrowing, stealing or faking an ID card, said electronics giant NEC, which developed the technology.

It will be rolled out across all facilities — including the 43 competition venues, athlete lodgings and media centres — but would not be used for spectators, organisers said.

“It is the first time facial recognition will be deployed for all people involved in the Olympics at all venues,” Olympic security chief Tsuyoshi Iwashita told reporters.

This will be especially practical for the Tokyo Olympics as the venues are scattered widely around the massive Japanese capital

The technology takes only 0.3 seconds to match up a face with a pre-registered photo, said Masaaki Suganuma, an official at NEC, which claims this is the world’s fastest such system.

In an experiment conducted last year, access using an ID card and facial recognition was 2.5 times faster than using barcodes and visual checks as at previous Olympics.

U.K. unveils new organ donation plan to address Indian-origin shortages

U.K. unveils new organ donation plan to address Indian-origin shortages

The U.K. government  announced new plans to change the law for organ and tissue donation to address the urgent need for organs within Indian-origin communities in the country.

The proposed new system of consent for organ and tissue donation is expected to come into effect in England in 2020 as part of a drive to help black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people desperately waiting for a life-saving transplant.

Under the new presumed consent system, those who do not want to donate their organs will be able to record their decision on the state-funded National Health Service (NHS) Organ Donor Register (ODR).

The announcement comes as a recent report called on the NHS to take more proactive action to address the high death rate among Indian-origin people in Britain due to low levels of organ donation within the community.

India has seen a 10-fold increase in its organ donation consent rates over the last decade as a result of sustained public awareness programmes, policy initiatives, and multi-stakeholder collaboration

A substantial number of patients on the transplant list, and dying as a result of long waiting periods, are Indians and Pakistanis.

According to NHS records, only 7% of donors last year were from BAME backgrounds, with Indians accounting for just 1.9% of the NHS ODR.

It found that 21% of people who died on the organ donation waiting list in the U.K. last year were from a BAME background, compared with 15% a decade ago

Sustained public education campaigns and youth engagement are responsible for a higher number of registrations and consent rates in these countries.

Both India and the U.K. follow the opt-in system, whereby families’ decision to donate organs of their loved one after death is discretionary.

The U.K. government is now moving towards adopting legislation favouring the opt-out system to address the growing crisis in the country.

P V Sindhu settles for Silver in World Championships' women's singles title clash

Ace Indian shuttler P V Sindhu finished second best yet again in a major tournament final as she went down tamely to Carolina Marin in the World Championships' women's singles title clash at Nanjing, China.

The Olympic silver medallist settled for another white metal following a 19-21 10-21 loss to Olympic champion Marin of Spain.

Sindhu, who had lost an epic final to Japan's Nozomi Okuhara at Glasgow last year, didn't have answers to Marin's blistering pace in the 45 minutes that the match lasted.

The second silver meant Sindhu is the only Indian to have four world championships podium finishes.

She had won two bronze medals at the 2013 Guangzhou and 2014 Copenhagen editions.

Marin became the first woman shuttler to win the world championships thrice. She had won the title in 2014 and the 2015 Jakarta edition.

In men's singles, Kento Momota of Japan won the title with an easy 21-13, 21-11 victory over local boy Shi Yuqi.

With this victory, Kento Momota became the first Japanese man to win the Championships.

Japan overtakes China to become world's second-largest stock market

Japan overtakes China to become world's second-largest stock market

Both markets are ranked after the US which is the world's largest at just over $31 trillion.

Japan has overtaken China as the world's number two stock market,

the Chinese market was worth $6.09 trillion next to Japan's $6.17 trillion.

China lost to Japan after Chinese stocks and currency fell this year amid a trade spat with the US.

The Chinese stock market soared to an all-time high of more than $10 trillion in June 2015 after overtaking Japan in late 2014.

The Shanghai Composite index is the world's second-worst-performing major stock index this year, having fallen 16.3 percent year-to-date.

The CSI300, the world's worst-performing index, has lost 16.4 percent.

The drop in Chinese shares this year has been driven by concerns about a slowdown in the world's second-biggest economy and that China would be worse off in a trade war with the United States.

US has taken a hard line on trade with several countries around the world, has applied tariffs to some goods imported from China and threatened taxes on the remaining imports.

These factors have prompted an overly pessimistic view on the corporate earnings outlook for 2019

Apple becomes first US-listed trillion-dollar company

Apple becomes first US-listed trillion-dollar company

Apple Inc became the first $1 trillion (USD) publicly listed U.S. company on Thursday, crowning a decade-long rise fueled by its ubiquitous iPhone that transformed it from a niche player in personal computers into a global powerhouse spanning entertainment and communications.

The tech company's stock jumped 2.8 percent to as high as $207.05, bringing its gain to about 9 percent since Tuesday (July 31) when it reported June-quarter results above expectations and said it bought back $20 billion of its own shares.

Started in the garage of co-founder Steve Jobs in 1976, Apple has pushed its revenue beyond the economic outputs of Portugal, New Zealand and other countries.

Apple's stock market value is greater than the combined capitalization of Exxon Mobil, Procter & Gamble and AT&T. It now accounts for 4 percent of the S&P 500.

One of three founders, Jobs was driven out of Apple in the mid-1980s, only to return a decade later and rescue the computer company from near bankruptcy.

He launched the iPhone in 2007, dropping "Computer" from Apple's name and super-charging the cellphone industry, catching Microsoft Corp, Intel Corp, Samsung Electronics and Nokia off guard.

That put Apple on a path to overtake Exxon Mobil in 2011 as the largest U.S. company by market value.

China on Tuesday launched Gaofen-11, an optical remote sensing satellite, as part of the country's high-resolution Earth observation project.

The Gaofen-11 satellite was launched on a Long March 4B rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in northern Shanxi Province.

It was the 282nd flight mission by a Long March carrier rocket.

The satellite can be used for land survey, urban planning, road network design, agriculture, and disaster relief.

Its data will also be used for the Belt and Road Initiative.

Since the Gaofen project began in 2010, China has gained an increasingly clearer view of the planet.

The Bel  and Road Initiative (BRI) or the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road is a development strategy proposed by the Chinese government which focuses on connectivity and cooperation between Eurasian countries, primarily the People's Republic of China (PRC), the land-based Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB) and the ocean-going Maritime Silk Road (MSR).
