The WGO celebrates World Digestive Health Day (WDHD) every May 29, initiating a worldwide public health campaign through its national societies and 50,000 individual members.

Each year, WDHD focuses upon a particular digestive disorder and seeks to increase general public awareness of prevention and therapy.

The World Gastroenterology Organisation is an international federation of over 100 national GI societies and 4 regional associations of gastroenterology representing over 50,000 individual members. WGO is focused on "the improvement of standards in gastroenterology training and education on a global scale."

The "International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers", May 29, is "an international day to pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication, and courage and to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace."

It was so designated by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 57/129, on December 11, 2002, after an official request of the Ukrainian Peacekeepers Association and the Government of Ukraine to the UN General Assembly and first celebrated in 2003.

The date, May 29, marks the anniversary of the creation of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in 1948 to monitor the ceasefire after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, which was the first ever UN peacekeeping mission.

A team of scientists of the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) have reported the discovery of three new plant species from the evergreen forest patches of the southern end of the Western Ghats in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The three new species found are,Eugenia sphaerocarpa of the Myrtaceae or Rose apple family,Goniothalamus sericeus of the Annonaceae family of custard apple,Memecylon nervosum of the Melastomataceae  family

he European Thyroid Association and American Thyroid Association etablished World Thyroid Day, May 25, back in 2008 to promote public awareness of thyroid disease. Thyroid disease, today the most widely occurring endocrine disorder, represents a rapidly growing problem round the world. It afflicts millions of people, affecting their daily life, increasing morbidity, reducing productivity and deteriorating the quality of life. In babies and children thyroid disease impacts the growth and development of the brain and body.

World Thyroid Day is part of the Thyroid Federation International’s International Thyroid Awareness Week (ITAW), celebrated May 24-30. This year the spotlight is focused on Thyroid and Child Development and stresses the crucial role played by thyroid hormones, from the prenatal to the adolescent stages, for the somatic and mental health of the child.

japan has launched a new space defence unit

japan has launched a new space defence unit called the Space Operations Squadron, part of Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF), to protect the Japanese satellites from threats.

This is the first Japanese Self-Defense Forces' unit dedicated to outer space and will be based in Fuchu in Tokyo.

The Space Operations Squadron has commenced with 20 members. Once it is fully operational by 2023, ASDF expects the team to grow to approximately 100 members.

Zoological Survey Of India Lists 20 Species Of Amphibians As 'Critically Endangered'

Zoological Survey of India(ZSI) has listed 20 species as critically endangered and 35 as 'endangered', an official said on Sunday, May 17.

Some species of frogs found in the Western Ghats of Kerala, Maharashtra and Karnataka, and in some hills of the northeast are included in the list of 'critically endangered' species.

the number of the species has gone up to 447 from 284 in 2009,

 Pseudophilautus amboli, a rare shrub frog species endemic to the Western Ghats at Amboliin Maharashtra and Jog Falls and Kudremukh in Karnataka, has also been termed as critically endangered

World Hypertension Day is a day designated and initiated by The World Hypertension League (WHL), which is itself an umbrella to organizations of 85 national hypertension societies and leagues. The WHL launched its first WHD on May 14, 2005. Since 2006, the WHL has been dedicating May 17 of every year as WHD

In 2005, as the inaugural effort, the theme was simply ‘Awareness of high blood pressure’. The 2006 theme was ‘Treat to goal’, with a focus on keeping blood pressure under control.

The recommended blood pressures are less than 140/90 mmHg for the general population and for the hypertensive population without any other complications, and less than 130/80 mmHg for those with diabetes mellitus or chronic kidney disease. These are the cut-off values recommended by international and Canadian guidelines

The FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in India has been rescheduled for February 17 and March 7, 2021, the governing body announced on Tuesday.

The tournament was initially scheduled to be held in India from November 2-21 in 2020 and was subsequently postponed 

FIFA announced that the tournament will keep original eligibility criteria despite the postponement -- players born on or after 1 January 2003 and on or before 31 December 2005 will be eligible to compete.

The U-17 Women's World Cup was originally scheduled to be played across five host cities - Navi Mumbai, Guwahati, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Bhubaneswar.

The Indian government has officially declared 11 May as National Technology Day in India to commemorate the first of the five nuclear tests that were carried out on 11 May 1998.

The day also marks the flight of indigenously developed Hansa-3. It was developed jointly by National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) lab.

On the same day, that is, May 11, 1988, the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) completed the final test fire of the surface-to-air Trishul missile.

It was officially signed by then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1998 and the day is celebrated by giving awards to various individuals and industries in the field of science and technology.

A Long March 5B rocket took off from the Wenchang launch site on the southern island of Hainan and eight minutes later an unmanned prototype spacecraft successfully separated and entered its planned orbit

A test version of a cargo return capsule also successfully separated from the rocket,

China hopes that the craft will one day transport astronauts to a space station that it plans to complete by 2022 – and eventually to the Moon.

 It will have capacity for a crew of six.

Professor Saurabh Lodha from Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay, has received the Young Career Award in Nano Science & Technology for the year 2020 instituted by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India.

 This award recognises his pioneering contributions in the development of logic transistor technologies beyond silicon and nanoelectronic devices based on two-dimensional Van der Waals materials.

Subimal Goswami was an Indian professional footballer who played as a striker or winger, captained both the Mohun Bagan club and the Indian national team.

 Popularly known as Chuni Goswami, he scored nine goals in 30 international appearances

He was an Olympian, represented India national team at the 1960 Summer Olympics.

He also led the team to achieve the gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games and earn the runners-up position at the 1964 AFC Asian Cup.

He was also a first class cricketer, playing Ranji Trophy for Bengal. He captained his team to the final of the tournament in 1971–72.

International Jazz Day

International Jazz Day is an International Day declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2011 "to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe."

The idea came from jazz pianist and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock.

Jazz Day is chaired by Hancock and the UNESCO Director-General. The celebration is recognized on the calendars of both UNESCO and the United Nations
