Iraq's Parliament has elected a veteran Kurdish Politician Barham Salih as the country's new President.

 He has named Shiite Adel Abdul Mahdi as Prime Minister of the country.

 The move will pave the way to form a new government, nearly five months after national elections.

Iraq held elections in May 12. The new President will have 15 days to task the nominee of the largest parliamentary bloc with forming a new government.

The Prime Minister-designate will then have 30 days to submit his cabinet to parliament.

Barham Ahmed Salih is an Iraqi Kurdish politician who serves as the 9th President of Iraq.

He is the former prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraqi Kurdistan and a former deputy prime minister of the Iraqi federal government

Iraq, officially known as the Republic of Iraq, is a country in Western Asia, bordered by Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest and Syria to the west.
