These silkworms feed on the aromatic leaves of Som and Soalu plants and are reared on trees similar to that of tasar. 

Its name is derived from Assamese word 'Muga', which means yellow. 

The Muga dress are usually very rich in colors and have embroidery of flowers, trees, leaves, bihu related structures etc. 

It is one of the most expensive silks in India.
