In a piece of big news for cricketing fans around the world, the Commonwealth Games Federation announced that women's T20 Cricket has been confirmed for inclusion at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022.

Eight teams will compete across eight match days, as cricket returns to the Commonwealth Games for the first time since 1998 when South Africa won the gold medal in a men's 50-over format competition in Kuala Lumpur.

Edgbaston, the venue of England's semi-final victory over Australia in the men's 50-over World Cup, will play host to all the matches.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games will take place in England from 27th July to 7th August.

There are nearly 850 languages spoken in  Papua New Guinea , making it the most linguistically diverse place on earth

India stands fourth with 453.

2019 is the United Nations' International Year of Indigenous Languages.

 In 2016, the UN's Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues pointed out that "40% of the estimated 6,700 languages spoken around the world were in danger of disappearing".

Several languages are now "endangered" and in the case of languages like Tiniguan (Colombian origin), there is just a single native speaker left.

Ethnologue, a directory of languages, lists 7,111 living languages worldwide

 Chinese, Spanish, English, Hindi and Arabic are the most widely spoken languages worldwide

These five languages account for what is spoken by over 40% of people worldwide.

South African batsman Hashim Amla has retired from all international cricket with immediate effect.

Amla played 124 Tests, 181 ODIs and 44 T20Is between in his 15-year-long cricketing career.

His more than nine thousand runs in Test cricket are the second-most by a South African cricketer, after the veteran Jacques Kallis.

He also collected the country’s third-most runs in ODI cricket after former skipper AB de Villiers and Kallis.

He went on to make 18,000 runs including 55 centuries and 88 fifty-plus scores across all formats of the game.

He is the only South African to have scored a triple century in the Test format.

Amla currently holds the record for being the fastest ever to 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 and 7000 ODI runs.

He also became the fastest cricketer to reach 10 ODI centuries.

Fiona Kolbinger becomes first woman to win cycling's Transcontinental Race

German  Fiona Kolbinger,   has won the Transcontinental Race, becoming the first woman to do so after cycling nearly 4,000km from Bulgaria to France unassisted in just 10 days, two hours and 48 minutes.

 It was Kolbinger’s maiden ultra-endurance race.

To complete the race this year, riders had to pass through at least seven countries, depending on the selected route with Austria, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Croatia, France, Italy, Kosovo, Serbia, Slovenia and Switzerland among the possibilities.

Britain's Ben Davies took second place, reaching the finish more than 10 hours behind Kolbinger, in 10 days, 13 hours and 10 minutes.⁠

Kolbinger, was one of 265 riders taking part, of which 40 were women

Transcontinental race was launched in 2013, beginning in London and finishing in Istanbul, with Belgium's Kristof Allegaert winning the opening two events before Josh Ibett became the first British rider to win the endurance race in 2015.

Bangladesh signed uranium supply deal with Russia

Bangladesh signed a deal with Russia for the supply of uranium for its 2,400 MW Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP).

Under the deal, Russia will supply the nuclear fuel needed for the plant during its entire life cycle.

The deal was signed in Dhaka between the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and Russian Nuclear Fuel Supply Company (TVEL).

Work on the two units of the plants, each producing 1200 MW of electricity is scheduled to be completed in 2022 and 2024 respectively.

The two countries have also signed 'spent fuel sent back’ agreement in 2017 for management of the nuclear waste of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP).

Nigeria became fourth African nation to join global coalition to protect pollinators

Nigeria became the fourth African country to join the Global Coalition of the Willing on Pollinators on July 25, 2019, a news report in the Nigerian media noted.

While Morroco became a member of this group in May this year, Ethiopia was the first African nation to be part of this global coalition in 2017. 

Burundi was the second African country to join this global group.

Other non-African nations such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Dominican Republic, Ireland and Mexico had joined the global group last year, Down To Earth reported earlier.

The coalition now has 28 signatories including 17 European countries, five from Latin America and the Caribbean and four from Africa.

The organisation was formed three years ago, to follow up on the findings of IPBES Assessment on Pollinators, Pollination and Food Production, which found that many of the world’s pollinator species are on the decline

The US has formally withdrawn from Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) with Russia.

The INF was signed by then US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987.

It banned missiles with ranges between 500 and 5,500 km.

US set the August 2  deadline for the US to withdraw if Russia didn't come into compliance.

Russia obligations to the treaty shortly afterwards.

US Federal Reserve cut benchmark lending rate

US Federal Reserve last night cut the benchmark lending rate for the first time in more than a decade, moving to stimulate the economy.

The target for the federal funds rate is now 2.0.

It was 2.25 per cent earlier.

The central bank vowed to "act as appropriate to sustain the expansion."

However, two officials on the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee opposed the move to provide more stimulus to the economy and dissented in the vote.
